What can I say about Oxalis? A stand out meal, we have a lot of love for the food being artfully turned out here. In residency at The Sun and 13 Cantons pub in Soho for 6 months, the duo behind Oxalis focus on seasonal British ingredients, cooked using French techniques. Housed in the side room of the pub, and known for its food residencies, the space is cold and lacking atmosphere on the Saturday afternoon we visit, but the friendly and helpful service more than makes up for that.
There is much to enjoy here, must-try dishes are the beef scrumpet, packed full of slow cooked meat, the melt in your mouth panisse, perfectly cooked hake paired with vinegary pickled veg and sweet romesco, and plump clams, with a kick of chilli and toasted bread to mop up the drinkable juices. That’s not to say the gamey grouse and rich wild mushrooms and polenta aren’t worth tucking into as well, they really are.
It’s been some time since we’ve had a meal like this: refined, top-notch food, food that has us talking long after we leave.
